March was a bit rough. This might be my first month in years that I didn't win at showdown, and my non-sd winnings weren't too hot either. I did run several BIs below EV, but I think my main problem was overconfidence from doing well in Jan/Feb. I wasn't hand-reading well, and was paying off too much on the river. After rakeback and a tourney cash I ended up about +$200ish for March. April grind begins today :)

Below is my sweet graph. The big dip towards the end was mainly due to a sick hand where I flopped the nut straight and ended up losing like a $950 pot to a flush. Good times:

I shipped a pretty solid month, for me, to finish things off. Obviously I suck at 25NL/PL, so I have to make sure I play stakes where they respect my raises in 2010 :)

As for all of 2009, I'm quite pleased overall. This has definitely been my most solid and consistent year, and I have to give a lot of credit to the group for this. It's very motivating to have a solid group of players behind me for support. Just knowing that I might have to talk about how my play is going each week keeps me from doing dumb stuff at the table (well, less dumb stuff at least). All the discussions we have and analysis of hands we do really keeps things fresh. I've had a lot of fun with you all too. We have a lot of great personalities in the group, which makes for a fun and exciting group dynamic.

Here's to a great upcoming 2010! Go FR Turtles!!!

Hey guys, my 21st birthday is this week, so I'm going to be doing a lot of partying, and most likely not going to make it to the session tomorrow, I'm sure everyone will understand. But just to prove that I have been taking poker seriously, and since PT3 just came out with an update that is compatible with Cake, I thought this would be a good time to post some graphs for the month of September to date, hopefully doomswitch isn't ignited afterwards for posting before the month is over.

Nevertheless September 1st I moved my entire roll over to Cake, and it couldn't have worked out better to date. I just logged of my biggest session ever, making over $1,200 dollars at 50NL-200NL. So here comes the shameless bragging... so far this month I have played 44K hands mixing anywhere from 50NL-200NL with a few hundred hands at 2/4. In that time I have made $1,050 in rakeback alone! On top of that i have profited $6,175 at the tables, which doubles my biggest month in 14 months on Stars.

Unfortunately I am a computer donk so the graphs are probably really small and tough too see, but oh well graphs from Cake Poker are the nuts.

So since Cake lets you change your name every week, and that's how PT keeps track of the players, I have two different graphs for the different names I played under, but these are all of my results from September 1st-16th.

This is where I first started playing full time on Cake, and was still getting a feel for the games.

This is for the screenname Ace_Rock, which I am currently playing under. As you can see I started getting a feel for the games and learned how to win without showdown!

Refusing to Play With Shorties

The past week and a half, I have been only playing on tables with ZERO shortstackers. This means I have been almost exclusively playing on the FTP deep tables. This has caused me to ease up on my table selection requirements a bit, but I think my decision to not sit with shorties is still very +EV for me. Here's why:

1. Short stacks really have a big impact on my opening and isolating ranges. With short stacks in the game, you have to be a lot more careful about the hands that you open and/or isolate weak players with. With the threat of a shorty shoving behind you, it really handcuffs you and causes one to miss out on a lot of +EV opportunities.

2. Going along with #1, playing on tables with all deep stacks allows for a much more LAG game. Even when there aren't many fish around, there are going to be so many more opportunities to use aggression and position to pick up chips. In fact, a tight/deep game should be one of the best games in which to do a lot of stealing. It's almost like "chipping up" on the bubble of a tournament. You can really open up your late-position range, and pick up a lot of pots uncontested. There are so many nitty regs that give up their blinds or fit-or-fold the flop, and they do this time after time. It's so so profitable, and it's very low variance!

3. Not only do shorties cause one to miss out on a lot of +EV spots, they also put you into a lot of neutral EV spots where you find yourself flipping. Sure you're not going to lose much in these situations, but you're not going to win much either. On the other hand, if you have an edge in a deep game you stand to win so much more money, especially since the edge can also be substantially larger. Also, at first glance a table full of 14/11's may look like hell, but if you pay attention it's not hard to find some serious leaks in a lot of these player's games.

4. Shorties tilt the hell out of me. If I lose 3 or 4 flips in a row to shorties, I'm ready to spew. I'm also not fond of the handcuffing effect talked about earlier. I think I can play on a much more even-keel in a deep game, where I don't have to deal with that crap.

5. Why? Cause fuck'em, that's why!

Villain is 32/13/3.3 over a good sample. I'm playing pretty aggro and have picked on this guy a little, but no real history. I raise small on the flop hoping for a spazz-out from his A's or overpairs. When the Q hits I decide most of his range is mid pp's and whiffed high cards, of which I don't think I'm getting more than one street of value from, so I check behind. River is a clear value-bet, then.............

Villain is a solid/winning reg and plays a pretty aggro 18/15/4 style. All the limpers are loose-passive fish, so I call with good implied odds and expect callers behind. I think villian's hand is pretty face up on the turn and I have just about the right amount to shove. I think he has to fold most of his range, but he calls with a hand I expect him to fold like 95%. WTF?

Question: I am unsure about the best line vs. villains range. Basically, I am not sure really why I am raising here vs. flat call vs. folding so I need some guidance.

I assume his limp call range looks something like this:
88-22,A2s+,KTs+,QTs+,JTs,T9s,A2o+,KJo+,QJo,JTo

I was thinking the flop raise allows me more freedom on later streets. If he flat calls here most likely he will check most turns. I can pot control the turn and value bet river based on how the board rolls out. Or I can opt to barrel the turn and hope to extract value from weaker holdings.

The question seems basic but I find myself raising and betting without the fundamental reasons of why I am doing so. What do I want to accomplish vs. his perceived range with my hand in this spot? Do I want to over rep my hand and remove his mediocre holdings?

ALL I KEPT THINKING ABOUT WAS THAT 55 hand when fish turned a fd! Then I remembered the set of 5's hand had much more texture. So his range is really much more narrow on this board.
Hero? ( I hated this card for the action that it kills. If I bet I expect him to continue with ax hands that include a diamond. I can't see him having a set here cause most would raise the flop protecting against the fd. So if I bet am getting a call from Ax and maybe a floated Kx type hand. If I check I run the risk of him checking behind and hitting flush outs or a weird straight. However, I get to keep in bluffs that floated that will bet this turn when I check and medium strength holdings that I can take advantage of on the river.)

I intially thought to reaise get it in on the flop. If we got it in on the flop I would not expect to be ahead. If I am against a set I still have around 30 perccent equity. If I added in AJ/kj/jq I am now a 42 percent. I thought of calling vs. that range and I started to think the fd I need may kill my action vs. his assigned range. So I was a little torn. Against this 11-12 percent flat range and the fact that pairs make up a large percentenge of the range vs. draws what do you prefer here? I am thinking I would hate to get reraised off this draw and villain will reaise here enough for it to be a concern. Should I just take an aggressive line and take it down here? Or is there meritt to pot controlling my medicore hand and draw. If he calls the cbet and say the turn is a 2h do you check fold? bet fold? So both villains are basically playing like maniacs, both are running about 30/20/5, and I have been very active at the table up to this point. I'm wondering what is my best play on the flop...when it was going down I thought that it was basically a shove or fold on that board with 2 opponents. I dunno I just thought calling OOP in a 3way pot on that board would be the worst option, and that any other raise size committed myself, so I might as well go ahead and ship. I'm wondering how much merit there is to folding here? In a limped pot should I always be going broke on that board with bottom two against those opponets?

How often should I be c-betting AK, after I 3bet and whiff

So just as a pretty general question, say that you are in position, a TAGish players opens in MP and you 3bet and he calls. Now the flop comes down 955, or whatever, and he checks it to you. What is the best line to take here? Are you guys almost always cbetting? How often do you check behind, and then what do you do to a 1/2 pot to 3/4 pot bet on a blank turn?

When you do c-bet what do you usually do after that, just give up? Or do you ever continue and fire out another barrel on maybe a J or Q turn? I find myself just getting consistently owned in this spot, cause every time I bet I'm never folding out better hands, and then when I double barrel a scary turn, and he ships it over the top and I am getting like 4.5/1 on a call and just want to shoot myself in the head. So I'm realized that one of my biggest leaks in playing AK in 3bet pots, so you guys have to help me!!!

What is the best line, c/c'ing then I guess c/f'ing river, ummm just c/f'ing the turn, I don't think I can bet/fold with the stack sizes. It just doesn't seem like there are many one pair hands left in this range that call it off once this turn and river rolls off. I was really hoping he wasn't going to raise me on the flop, and once he did I was completely froze. I did not know what to do and had no idea what the best play was. I thought about folding but I thought that was way too weak tight. With so many draws on the board, and I thought AK could be in his range, I thought I had to raise or fold. Any raise committed myself so I just decided to shove. I dunno what was optimal here, what do you guys think?

Here are a few hands I played whilst a sweat session w/Tyler. I thought they were both pretty cool and wanted to share them with everyone.

Hand 1: Villian is very loose and fairly passive. He has a pretty wide range for calling the 3-bet and flop, but by the time we reach the river he mostly should have 1 pair-type hands. His river bet seems very defensive, and he is almost certainly not thinking enough to make this bet to induce a raise from us, hence our river raise. Only a tiny portion of his range can call us on the river, and his action does not indicate that sort of strength.

Hand 2: Getting max value with 2nd pair OOP! This hand was pretty sweet. Villian here is also mostly loose/passive. I think most of villian's range here is a draw, so I think my best line for getting value OOP is to bet the flop and turn, then check/call the river when all the draws missed.

Villain is a reg who I would consider TAG running at about 16/11/1.9 with a 3bet of 3%. So it really doesn't look like he's getting too out of line, and since this is all happening in relatively early position I am not to happy about my hand.

Here's my line of thinking. If I 4bet I can't really ever get away from the hand, I would be completely committed if I 4bet here, right?
Then I thought if I 4bet here villain is snap folding basically everything that I beat. I really don't think he can do anything else with AK, or even QQ, because my range is just so strong.

However I really don't like playing a big pot like this OOP, so I really don't know if I should 4bet/get it in here, just because I don't think he is getting it in with worse enough of the time.

So once that flop comes out and he pots it, I just decide to fold. I thought if he was just c-betting with air, or AK it would be closer to 1/2 pot, and I was planning on just going with it if he bet closer to that amount. However once he bet pot I really thought that he wanted to go with his hand, and since I didn't have a heart I thought folding was the best play.

Success!!!! I think I finally posted a hand history!!!! This is exciting and there should be plenty more where this came from.

So this was a really tough spot for me, because both villains seemed to be competent regulars multitabling. Villain 1 (UTG opener) was playing TAGish but I don't have many hands on him. Villain two always plays a ton of tables and is a nit playing 12/7/1.6, so once he shipped it on the turn in a multiway pot I really thought the best play was to fold, but my damn fingers wouldn't let me and I called it off. What do you guys think I should have done different here?

Once again I have implemented the don't look at bankroll/daily $ ups and downs. I have removed monies won or lost from my Holdem Manager. I find it focuses me more on my play than my variance. I'm trying very hard to only see chips when I am sitting at tables instead of cash. This allows me to play more aggressively and less "scared". Obviously, I still have a sense if I am winning or losing for the day/week etc...we'll see how long I can go.

For the month of May PokerStars will let you cash in FPP's for $$$$. I redeemed 10k points for 160 smackers the other day...sorta like the rakezback...

I have been doing great not tilting while playing...until last night...lost at least a BI to tilt. I was playing at tables with regs (mistake 1) and was getting 3-bet to death. They probably just had hands...since they were multi-tabling and I played back at the wrong time (mistake 2) and also shoved on a short-stack with 40BB when if was a clear fold (mistake 3). Oops!

So this is a really weird hand, especially because of the villain. So basically the villain is playing 23/4/.67 and I have a little history with him. Earlier in the session he flopped a set and didn't put in one raise. I had top two pair and value bet on every street and he just c/c'd on every street.

So the reason this is significant is because of the line that he takes in this hand. He just calls the flop and turn, so basically I can keep just about everything in his range, from higher sets all the way to draws. When usually on this type of board when a villain is just calling I am very comfortable putting him on a draw, but here I didn't really know what to think. I guess there really aren't that many hands that I get value from on that river, if I was good would I just check/fold? I'm interested to hear what you guys think

I said no way does he 4 bet without AA or KK...look at his stats! Fender says this is an easy shove...I say I don't like shoving with AK to a 4-bet in FR...he yells something about my equity and forces me to shove.

So I am just basically asking this to hear what your guys general theory is in this spot against a competent aggressive player, just basically a good reg. I just seem to get very lost in this spot every time that it happens, so I would very much like a good rule of thumb.

Is there any point that I should get away from this hand, maybe call turn and muck river? I dunno it just seems pretty gross, when I'm playing an aggressive competent player, especially since I usually have a pretty aggro image myself.

First of all I have not been too successful at posting hands on this web site so hopefully I can make it happen.

This guys was playing 13/8 over 600 hands, but his 3bet was at 5%. This seemed like a pretty crazy 3bet percentage for a player playing like this, so right off the bat I had trouble analyzing his range.

His check behind on the flop threw me off, because it was such a gross board, so I really didn't know what to think when he shipped the turn. I thought that I beat a lot of pairs that were lower than mine, and thought I could call, but then again I never fold, so what do you guys think?
